1.47: Estimate roots using a graph

(a) Complete the table of values for $y=\dfrac{x^3+2}{x+1}$ giving your answers to 2 decimal places where appropriate.

(b) On the grid opposite draw the graph of $y=\dfrac{x^3+2}{x+1}$ for $0\le x\le4$. (2)

(c) By drawing a suitable straight line on your graph obtain an estimate, to 1 decimal place, of the root of the equation $x^3+x^2-3x-2=0$ in the interval $0\le x\le4$. (5)
